Free Fall - Richard Sussman (1978)

A hidden gem. A great album, but not that well known, featuring stellar playing by Tom Harrell, Larry Schneider and Gerry Bergonzi. Great compositions and arrangements by pianist Richard Sussman. Great palying also by Mike Richmond (double bass) and Jeff Williams (drums). I play this album to my students when talking about the developpement and evolution of 'modern' jazz.

The music draws on a wide range of influences, from free jazz and modal improvisation to fusion-style grooves, and harmonic textures inspired by classical composers like Debussy, Ravel, and Scriabin. A concept that is reminiscent of the best productions of the great European label ECM...

Un trésor caché. Un très bon album, mais peu connu, mettant en vedette des performances exceptionnelles de Tom Harrell, Larry Schneider et Gerry Bergonzi. Superbes compositions et arrangements du pianiste Richard Sussman. Très beau jeu aussi de Mike Richmond (contrebasse) et Jeff Williams (batterie). Je fais écouter cet album à mes étudiants lorsque je parle du développement et de l’évolution du jazz “moderne”. La musique puise dans un vaste éventail d’influences, allant du free jazz et de l’improvisation modale à des grooves inspirés du jazz fusion, tout en faisant appel à des textures harmoniques évoquant des compositeurs classiques tels que Debussy, Ravel et Scriabine. Un concept qui n’est pas sans rappeler les meilleures productions du grand label européen ECM...
