Music for Large & Small Ensembles - Kenny Wheeler (1990)

A game changer... I think there is a before and an after 'Music for Large & Small Ensembles'. Wonderful tunes and arrangements, and also lots of great solos... There's of course Kenny, but also JT on piano, the wonderful voice of Norma Winstone, Dave Holland, Peter Erskine, John Abercrombie, Stan Sulzmann... A BIG 'must listen'. For me Kenny is the Ennio Morricone of jazz; his compositions are full of melodic and harmonic gems. He created a unique form of modern jazz, that draws as much from classical and folk music as it does from the jazz tradition,

and also developped a very unique way of playing. Goosebumps guaranteed just from the opening of 'The Sweet Time Suite'. For those interested in knowing more about Kenny Wheeler I suggest the book 'Song for Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler' ; a compelling and insightful book that is well worth reading.

Un véritable point tournant… Je pense qu’il y a un “avant” et un “après” Music for Large & Small Ensembles. Des thèmes et des arrangements magnifiques, et de superbes solos. Il y a bien sûr Kenny, mais aussi John Taylor au piano, et Dave Holland, la voix magnifique de Norma Winstone, et Peter Erskine, John Abercrombie, Stan Sulzmann… Un GRAND “à écouter absolument”. Pour moi, Kenny est l’Ennio Morricone du jazz : ses compositions regorgent de trésors mélodiques et harmoniques. Il a créé une forme unique de jazz moderne, qui puise autant dans la musique classique et les traditions folkloriques que dans l'héritage du jazz, et a aussi développé un style de jeu vraiment unique. Frissons garantis juste avec l'ouverture de 'The Sweet Time Suite'.

Pour ceux qui souhaitent en apprendre davantage sur Kenny Wheeler, 'Song for Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler' est un ouvrage qui mérite vraiment d’être lu.
