Road Games - Allan Holdsworth (1983)

I remember when I first heard the opening track - 'Three Sheets to the Wind' - I had never heard anybody play like this. It still amazes me. The playing, the writing... The whole musical concept is so singular, and beautiful... Holdsworth was in a world of his own. He didn't like this record very much (he didn't get along with the producer, Ted Templeman, and he didn't like the final mix), but I never understood why, it's a wonderful record. Great performances also by Jeff Berlin on bass, and Chad Wackerman on drums. This album received a nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 1984 Grammy Awards.

Je me souviens de la première fois où j’ai entendu le morceau d’ouverture — Three Sheets to the Wind — je n’avais jamais entendu personne jouer comme ça. Ça m’émerveille encore aujourd’hui. Le jeu, l’écriture… Tout le concept musical est tellement singulier et magnifique… Holdsworth vivait dans son propre monde. Il n’aimait pas beaucoup ce disque (il ne s’entendait pas avec le producteur, Ted Templeman, et n’aimait pas le mixage final), mais je n’ai jamais compris pourquoi : c’est un album magnifique. Excellentes performances aussi de Jeff Berlin et Chad Wackerman. Cet album a reçu une nomination pour la Meilleure Prestation Instrumentale Rock aux Grammy Awards de 1984.
