Commitment - Jim Hall (1976)

This is my favorite Jim Hall album. My university guitar teacher—and friend—Gary Schwartz introduced me to it. On this recording, you can hear Jim in a variety of settings, alongside musicians such as Tommy Flanagan, Art Farmer, Ron Carter, Don Thompson, and Terry Clarke. There’s even a beautiful duo with his wife, Jane, as well as a great overdubbed duet where Jim plays with himself (Down the Line). I learned a tremendous amount from this album. Jim’s playing is melodic and swings effortlessly; although rooted in the traditional style, it never falls into clichés. A true master, at the height of his artistry. All my students have to learn and perform his solo on Indian Summer.

C’est mon album préféré de Jim Hall. Mon professeur de guitare à l’université — et ami — Gary Schwartz me l’a fait découvrir. Sur cet enregistrement, on peut entendre Jim dans une variété de contextes, aux côtés de musiciens tels que Tommy Flanagan, Art Farmer, Ron Carter, Don Thompson et Terry Clarke. Il y a même un très beau duo avec son épouse, Jane, ainsi qu’un excellent duo en overdub où Jim joue avec lui-même (Down the Line).

J’ai énormément appris grâce à cet album. Le jeu de Jim est mélodique et swing avec une grande aisance ; bien qu’enraciné dans le style traditionnel, il ne tombe jamais dans les clichés. Un véritable maître, au sommet de son art. Tous mes étudiants doivent apprendre et interpréter son solo sur Indian Summer.
