Revealer - Madison Cunningham (2022)

Great album. I remember the first time I heard it thinking : “There’s something familiar here—a certain twist in the writing and the melodies.” I was pleasantly surprised to later learn that two of Madison’s influences are Joni Mitchell and Rufus Wainwright—pretty heavyweight inspirations. The songs are beautifully crafted, with strong melodic hooks, inventive guitar work, and rich, textured sounds. It’s also worth noting the presence of one of my favorite drummers, Matt Chamberlain, whose contribution really elevates the record. The production is excellent across the board. The album ended up winning the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2023—not exactly 'pure' folk, but I suppose genres can be flexible...

Super album. Je me souviens de la première fois que je l’ai écouté, je me suis dit : « Il y a quelque chose de familier ici — une certaine tournure dans l’écriture et les mélodies. » J’ai été agréablement surpris d’apprendre plus tard que deux des influences de Madison sont Joni Mitchell et Rufus Wainwright — des références de très haut niveau. Les chansons sont magnifiquement construites, avec des hooks mélodiques accrocheurs, un travail de guitare inventif et des sonorités riches et texturées. Il faut aussi souligner la présence de l’un de mes batteurs préférés, Matt Chamberlain, dont la contribution élève vraiment l’album. La production est excellente du début à la fin. L’album a d’ailleurs remporté le Grammy du meilleur album folk en 2023 — pas exactement du folk 'pur', mais les genres restent flexibles…
