Welcome to Life - David Binney (2004)

In the musical stylistic class that I teach, students are, at one point, required to give an oral presentation on a topic of their choice. It was through one of these presentations that I discovered this beautiful album of original compositions by the great alto saxophonist David Binney. He is surrounded here by incredible musicians: Chris Potter, Scott Coley, Brian Blade, Adam Rogers and Craig Taborn. The writing and playing is high level and fresh. Modern jazz with touches of 'almost' rock, pop, funky and free elements. Great solos throughout the whole album. My favorite tracks on the album: Lisliel, Frez, Enchantress & Ici.

Dans le cours de stylistique musicale que j’enseigne, les étudiants doivent, à un certain moment, faire une présentation orale sur un sujet de leur choix. C’est grâce à l’une de ces présentations que j’ai découvert ce magnifique album de compositions originales du grand saxophoniste alto David Binney. Il est ici entouré de musiciens incroyables : Chris Potter, Scott Colley, Brian Blade, Adam Rogers et Craig Taborn. L’écriture et l’interprétation sont de haut niveau et très rafraichissantes. Du jazz moderne avec de légères touches de ''presque'' rock et pop, ainsi que des éléments funky et free. Des superbes solos aussi, tout au long de l’album.
